Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights are one of the most popular fittings for swimming pools. With an increased emphasis on energy efficiency, LED technology has become a standard feature, gradually replacing incandescent bulbs.
LED lights work by pumping voltage through a semiconductor, which emits light. In contrast, incandescent and halogen lights rely on burning filaments. LED fittings are straightforward to install, as they can be plugged directly into the power source.
Although LED pool lighting is more expensive upfront compared to halogen or incandescent lights, it offers significant savings in the long run due to its energy efficiency. Incandescent lights typically run from 300 to 500 watts, whereas LED bulbs use as little as 42 watts. Installing LED lights in your swimming pool can lead to considerable savings on your electricity bills.
LED pool lighting is highly durable, with well over 20,000 hours of power. Quality LED brand names can last for 10 years or more, although this may be reduced for lower-cost products.
With longer-lasting lamps, LED products typically require fewer replacements as they contain tough diodes. This means you’ll spend more time enjoying your well-lit pool and less time maintaining it.

If the internal components of the LED lights fail, the entire fitting needs to be replaced. Cost is another drawback of LED fittings. Beyond the higher upfront costs of the lights, LED pool lighting requires specific transformers and converters to utilize the correct voltage, typically between 12-32 volts. This necessitates additional electronic equipment, which increases the overall cost. Fortunately, these transformers are generally reliable and not prohibitively expensive.
LED lights, like halogen fittings, are somewhat susceptible to leaking. However, the refined resin-filled LED light fittings largely mitigate this problem. If you need to replace a broken LED fitting or a pool light that has leaked, you can opt for the resin-filled LED version to avoid similar issues in the future.
